Ingesting histogram metrics

To use histogram metrics within Splunk, you need to ingest histogram-formatted metric data from an application such as Prometheus or a similar metrics monitoring client that utilizes an HTTP Event Collector (HEC).

The Splunk HEC is an effective method to send data to Splunk. This methodology enables you to send data over HTTP (or HTTPS) directly to Splunk from another application.

HEC was fashioned for the mindset of the application developer, such that it takes only a minimal number of lines of code to be added to an application to enable the app to send data. Also, HEC is token-based, so you never need to hardcode Splunk credentials into an app or supporting files to support authentication.

The Splunk HEC provides a new way for developers to send application logging and metrics directly to Splunk via HTTP in a highly efficient and secure manner.

To enable the HEC using Splunk Web, perform the following steps:

From the Splunk main page, click on Settings, then Data Inputs.

On the Data Inputs page, scroll down and click on HTTP Event Collector.

On the HTTP Event Collector page (shown in the following screenshot), click on Global Settings:
